When Adam and Eve disobeyed God command not to eat of the forbidden fruit, sin entered the world, and man deserved to die. However, God did not want man to die, and began a plan to rescue man from his sin. His plan became a promise when He made a covenant with Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel. His promise was fulfilled with the birth of a Messiah, the one who would save all people from their sins. His name was Jesus, the Christ, the one foretold by the prophets of Israel, God’s chosen nation. Prayer, from the Christian Science perspective, does not ask God to intervene, but is rather a process of learning more of God’s spiritual reality - “awakening mortal thought,” by degrees, to spiritual truth. Christian Scientists show the effect of this spiritualization of thought in healing, — physical, emotional, and otherwise. Health care is not attempted through drugs, surgery, or other physical manipulation, but through “Christian Science treatment,” a specific form of prayer intended to spiritualize thought.
